Score: 9.3/10 | Independent / AWAL | January 15, 2026 | 13 tracks | 51 minutes
Once every few years, a debut album arrives that feels less like a beginning and more like a fully realized statement. Amara Nova’s After Hours, Before Dawn is that album for 2026.
The Songs
Opener “Before I Knew Better” sets the template: a single guitar chord, Nova’s voice entering unaccompanied, then the gradual arrival of upright bass, vibraphone, and finally drums played so softly they sound like rainfall. “3am in Atlanta” is the album’s centerpiece — eight minutes of slowly building intensity about insomnia and heartbreak that ends in an a cappella gospel resolution.
The Craft
Nova’s classical training at Guildhall gives her a harmonic sophistication immediately audible in every song. The production is intimate and acoustic, perfectly suited to the emotional honesty of the writing.
Verdict: Exceptional — Best Debut of the Year
After Hours, Before Dawn is the most extraordinary debut in recent neo-soul history. Amara Nova is a generational talent.
