Time moves differently for Erykah Badu. New Amerykah III has been anticipated since 2010. That it arrives 16 years later, fully realized and utterly uncompromised, feels less like a surprise than a fulfillment of prophecy.
The Sound
Where Part One was dense and political, and Part Two was sensual and psychedelic, Part Three achieves something rarer: genuine stillness. The album opens with “Still Water,” two minutes of solo piano over which Badu hums without words. The production, handled by Karriem Riggins and Georgia Anne Muldrow, is acoustic-forward — upright bass, vibraphone, acoustic piano, live drums that breathe rather than pound.
The Songs
“River Don’t Lie” is an instant classic — a seven-minute meditation on grief and acceptance. “Crown” closes the album with a gospel choir and a melody so devastatingly simple that the first time I heard it, I had to stop walking and just stand for a moment.
Verdict: Essential — A Masterwork
New Amerykah III is not just Erykah Badu’s best album — it is one of the finest records in the history of neo-soul. Essential listening.
